Our Story

In 1978, Hanshi, meaning “true role model”, Dave Kovar opened his first school with a vision to empower people by teaching martial arts on a completely different level than could be found anywhere else. His brother Tim, who brought innovative business practices to the operation, soon joined him.

The brothers’ reputation for combining self-defense and life skills grew. As the word spread, the Kovar’s opened new locations, garnered awards, earned prestigious industry accolades, and gained national recognition.

Satori means to be “in the moment, at your best” in Japanese. And this is exactly what Kovar’s is all about. So we added Satori to our name to embody the spirit of Satori: Indomitable Spirit, Generosity, Experiential, Teamwork, Community, and Growth. Never static, Hanshi and his team continue to innovate and grow the various aspects of Kovar’s to develop its curriculum and outreach.

Our Curriculum

Kovar’s curriculum is a unique blend of different martial arts styles that place a strong emphasis on valuable life skills.

For Children

  • This means better grades in school and better behavior at home.

For Teens

  • This means to help gain a better understanding of how to deal with the complexities in their lives.

For Adults

  • This translates directly to increased success in business and more fulfilling personal relationships.

Our Mission

Through high quality martial arts instruction, we empower people of all ages to achieve their full potential.

By emphasizing self-defense, health, fitness and life skills in a friendly, safe, positive environment, we inspire our students to become more confident, successful, and contributing members of our community.
